Sense of Place Publishing announces the release of the digital edition of America’s Destruction of Iraq. The author Michael M. O’Brien, shows how George W. Bush’s invasion of Iraq in March 2003 was the greatest foreign policy mistake the United States has ever made, the worst ever made by a modern nation-state. Tragically, he drew much of the Western world into the conflict, in the form of the so-called Coalition of the Willing. America’s notorious prisons in Iraq incubated the formation of Islamic State, not just because of the huge resentments they created inside a sovereign nation, not just because the human rights abuses which occurred within inflamed Muslim sentiment around the world, but because they proved the safest, most perfect meeting places for jihadists to plot the formation of the Islamic State. From a Washington insider and former contract worker within Iraq, America’s Destruction of Iraq brings a unique perspective amidst the growing body of literature on Iraq and the spiraling growth of Islamic State, neither soldier nor policy wonk nor academic, Michael O’Brien illustrates another aspect of the disaster of the American invasion, the appalling bureaucratic and managerial disasters that wasted billions upon billions of dollars scraped off the back of hardworking American taxpayers, all to make a dire situation worse.
America’s Destruction of Iraq by Washington insider Michael M. O’Brien details the origins of the terrorism and Islamic fundamentalism now spreading across widening stretches of the Middle East. The outgrowth of Americas involvement in Iraq is the Islamic State, the most powerful, violent and dangerous terrorist group in history.
Michael M. O’Brien is an outlier, a staunch conservative and former political appointee in the administration of George W. Bush, with an abiding contempt for the political and military mismanagement of the Iraq War, officially referred to as Operation Iraqi Freedom. A graduate of West Point and former Infantry officer, O’Brien saw the Iraq War from the inside out not as a soldier but as a contractor advising the
new Iraqi Army and Ministry of Defence on base and facility reconstruction, and acquisition of land and Forward Operating Bases (FOBs) originally built for Coalition forces.
Compounding in outrage, compelling in detail, Michael M. O’Brien condemns the waste of tens of billions of U.S. taxpayer dollars and the needless loss of American and Iraqi lives. The Bush administrations desire for war
was built on fabrication and the political agendas of its senior advisors. But it is the generals for which O’Brien saves his greatest disdain because they should have known how to properly execute the war, and the courage to tell their political
superiors the truth.
Americas Destruction of Iraq is a detailed example of the military-industrial complex President Eisenhower warned America of in 1961. In a way only a contractor with a military and political background who was at the heart of Americas reconstruction of Iraq could do, O’Brien exposes military intervention in Iraq
for what it is: a disaster equal to or worse than the quagmire of the Vietnam War.
Americas Destruction of Iraq details the deception and mismanagement of Americas involvement in Iraq since 1991, and continuing through to the present day.
