Morrison hints at more powers for world health bodies.
AUSTRALIAN ENDORSEMENT
Prime Minister Scott Morrison has endorsed the prospect of more powers for international health bodies such the World Health Organisation (WHO) at a press conference in Darwin today.
One reporter raised an upcoming WHO meeting on 22 May, and the potential for a ‘pandemic treaty’ to be signed during these discussions. When Morrison was asked if he would sign the treaty, he was supportive.
“We have said right from the outset.. the WHO should have those powers and those authorities to be able to go and deal with pandemic situations.”
Morrison continued: “The idea that countries can just say ‘no, you can’t come in and have a look at a pandemic that’s about to break out’ .. I think it’s only sensible that this an area of international co-operation that is very very important”.
“We will look at the text of all that, but we have been one of the countries that have been positive about these sorts of changes”
The Prime Minister said they will still ‘look at the details’, “as you always should”, but is very supportive of the idea that unelected world bodies can come into your country and ‘assist’ with plans.
Just like when the federal government signed a bill to allow foreign and private troops on Australian soil.
All for our ‘safety and security’.
The comments come ahead of the conveniently timed meeting of the next World Health Assembly, which will happen just as our elections are in the midst of happening.
WHO ‘PANDEMIC TREATY’?
The 75th World Health Assembly will commence on 22 May and is expected to end on 28 May.
It will be the first in-person ‘health assembly’ since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
This is obviously the 75th time this meeting has been held, so on the surface it is nothing new.
So why all of the suspicion and questions over a pandemic treaty?
Well, here is the context.
On 1 December 2021, the 194 members of the World Health Organization (WHO) reached a consensus to “begin the process of drafting and negotiating a convention, agreement or other international instrument under the Constitution of the World Health Organization to strengthen pandemic prevention, preparedness and response”.
The aims found in this consensus are quite similar to the outline of the upcoming meeting:
Many who favour the treaty believe that it offers the best way to increase political commitment from states to ‘reform’ international health governance.
Let’s not forget that government responses to COVID-19 have purportedly violated or manipulated many treaties, including human rights agreements.
To what extent will the ‘Commission’ ensure that the citizen, who has no direct vote in a body such as the WHO, is not bypassed in the decision-making process and that a shift of competence further and further away from the voter does not lead to an increasing ‘de-democratisation’ of our society?
We all know the answer to those questions.
Furthermore, I thought the pandemic was over? I thought it had all ‘come to an end’?
What is all of this talk by the Prime Minister and other characters about ‘future pandemics’?
MORE ON THE HORIZON?
As elections begin to wrap up, many have predicted a return to more restrictions in the near future.
The mainstream media is already beginning to promote this notion.
Australia’s peak medical body is calling for a return of masks for all indoor settings as a “dreadful” flu strain and COVID-19 “overwhelm hospitals”.
Early this month, Bill Gates was the first to let the world know that things have not settled down just yet, warning of the potential of ‘new strains’ that could ‘wreak havoc’ once again.
“We’re still at risk of this pandemic generating a variant that would be even more transmissive and even more fatal,” the billionaire Microsoft co-founder and public health advocate told the Financial Times.
Let’s not forget that Gates is the major funding partner of the World Health Organisation.
Could handing over powers to international forces soon align with a new pandemic direction?
Bill Gates praised Australia’s harsh pandemic response. Could this be a test model for the world?
Could we see the World Health Organisation on our shores in the future if a ‘resurgence’ appears?
